FIV - FELINE IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV):
FIV is an AIDS-like syndrome. The Feline AIDS apellation originates in immunodeficiency and its AIDS-like symptoms but FIV is only a danger to felids. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a serious and incurable disease. Infection transmitted via bodily fluids.

Symptoms:
Infection causes fever, dispiritedness, lack of appetite and slimming. Due to the decrease of body’s defensive ability, secondary infections might appear causing various symptoms. Emergence of stomatitis is typical. Pneumonia and skin infection are common just like in case of AIDS in humans. Also nervous system symptoms might appear.

Diagnose:
Can be diagnosed unequivocally via blood test.

Prevention, (Treatment):
Unfortunately there is no vaccination against the virus, so the only thing we can do is neutering cats which can go outside or meet other cats to decrease the chance of infection.
Existing treatments are only for symptoms. (For example immune-strengthening products) The most important to separate infected cats from their companions.
